On the Beach - Devastation and Recovery
We made no attempt to document the current state of recovery or lack thereof, but we had a couple of opportunities to take pictures of the mixed state of destruction and new construction two years after the storm.
The first four pictures below were taken by Maureen in Ocean Springs, where we were in walking distance of the beach. The remaining pictures are a sampling of those taken by David from a moving car along the Beach Road (US 90) en route to New Orleans. As you scroll through them, keep in mind that this was a heavily developed beach area pre-Katrina, with a house or other structure on almost every open space. Except where there is new construction, almost nothing else is seen except grass, live oak trees, and an occasional FEMA trailer or other temporary dwelling.

Beauvoir was one of the landmarks of the Gulf Coast, the last home of Jefferson Davis. It suffered $40 million damage.
