Tuesday, 6/12 – Sue Guptill
Tuesday started early for everyone, but especially Jackie and Virginia, who were up by 4:30, and in the kitchen by 5:00. The rest of us were up at 6:00 when the lights came on, ate a delicious breakfast, and headed to the job site. The job started well, with the repair of a corner of the house that was rotting away, beginning repair of the popcorn ceiling (although this was much more challenging than first expected), and painting in bathrooms. At the same time, another unanticipated and serious job emerged. The laminate flooring in the hall had buckled significantly, and removing the buckled part wasn't enough
– to fix the floor required removing the entire hall floor. Alternatives for replacement were discussed with the owner, who really wanted to continue with some kind of laminate flooring. All of this was getting a little beyond our skill level! (Help was to arrive the next day, however
– stay tuned).
The whole project came to a frustrating standstill in the afternoon, when threatening thunderstorms led us to move everything we could under plastic or shelter. At the end of the day, though, we could see some progress, and had a plan for the next day. The home owner, Kenyatta, who works in Biloxi, came home late in the afternoon, so we had a chance to show her what we'd done, and reassure her that we'd get more done the next day
– although she wasn't the one worried about that.
We arrived back at Camp Victor to learn some exciting news. Fema, the camp cat, was in labor – 3 kittens were born, and 2 more came before the evening was over. This was an event we had been eagerly awaiting since we arrived, as we carefully walked around the large cat lying lethargically in the hall. So far, we haven't seen the kittens, but hear they're doing well.
