A Crappy Day for Randy
Our group went to Ocean Springs to offer our help to others. By our second day repairing the house we were working on it was apparent that we needed to ask for help ourselves. A laminate floor had been installed in the house since Katrina but it was not done properly and had begun to buckle and break in the hallway. Although it was not on our work list we knew that the floor needed to be replaced. No one on our crew had experience laying laminate flooring so when we returned to Camp Victor we sought out help from other volunteers.
Help came to us through the Calvary Moravian Church in Winston-Salem. Brooks, who had earlier that morning had been presented with a coffee mug that read “Stud Muffin” and his son “Brain”, whose real name was Brian but his nametag read “Brain”, agreed to come out to our site on Thursday morning to provide some guidance. They came to our site, which was about 30 minutes away, even though they still had work to do on their own project and were hosting a cookout that night.
Another project we were working on was laying baseboard through most of the house. Boards needed to be primed, painted, and cut. Sue took on the task of mitre saw Buddha. We had been relegated to the front porch because of approaching thunder storms, so Sue sat cross legged on the concrete floor of the porch as we tried to figure out the proper angle to make each cut.
Wednesday ended up being the first night that we did not have supper at the camp and the first trip out for Virginia and Jackie other than short walks around the camp. We went out to dinner in D’Irberville at a Cajun restaurant. It must have been time for us to bust out a bit, and to say the least we were a little rowdy, but many a good laugh was had by all. Perhaps not by others in the restaurant but certainly by everyone at our table.
Oh yeah, back to a crappy day for Randy. I’ll let him tell you about it, but just remember to be careful while visiting the rest rooms at Lowes.
